There are instances where the same income is taxed more than once in the hands of the same tax payer. This gives rise to double taxation. For this reason, in order to encourage the growth of international trade, Maltese law contemplates 3 main mechanisms for the elimination of double taxation.

Since Malta does not have double tax treaties with all the countries of the world, Malta also grants relief even when there is no treaty, that is, a credit for tax paid abroad is also granted on a purely unilateral basis.

FLAT RATE FOREIGN TAX CREDIT (FRFTC)

This is a deemed foreign tax of 25% flat rate foreign tax where it does not refer to the actual foreign tax paid. This is computed on the income or gains received by the company.
